III. THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

A. As Set Forth in the Old Testament.

Someone has said that the Holy Spirit is mentioned times in the Old Testament. However, the teaching of the Holy Spirit is not as clear in the Old Testament as it is in the New.

1. His Manifestations.

a. As . “Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him” (). “Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon” (). See also Judges 3:10; 14:6.

b. As . “The Spirit of Jehovah [Hebrew — clothed itself with] Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him” (). See also II Chronicles 24:20.

c. As . “Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers . . . until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest” ().

d. As . “I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship” (). See also Micah 3:8.

e. As . “The LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that when the spirit rested upon them they prophesied, and did not cease” (). See also Numbers 11:26; Isaiah 11:2.

The Holy Spirit is never represented as the believer. The Holy Spirit them, but never took his within them.

No Old Testament saint was ever with the Holy Ghost. That initial baptism came at Pentecost, days after Christ arose from the dead.
